I love you bro! No, no bro I love you!

Today I thought I would write about something I enjoy very much when I am watching some of my favorite shows … bromance. I don’t mean bromance in a negative connotation, or insincerely. I think the best part of the bromance is the chemistry the two make characters have in regards to playing off each other and improv. Bromance, in my opinion, is often the best part of the show.

I decided to compile some of my favorite (in my humble opinion) broamnces. These are in no particular order, and after I write this I may say “aw man, I forgot these guys.” Hopefully I don’t repeat myself and say they are just too funny together as I write out this list, even though I think that is true of all of them.
(side note: Write … Isn’t funny how sometimes we say write, when we are just typing up something?) (Different side note: And isn’t funny how we say, say when we are not really talking out loud.)

Nick and Monroe on Grimm, played by David Giuntoli and Silas Weir Mitchell. If you watch the show you would understand how impossible their friendship is because Nick’s a Grimm and Monroe is a Blutbad. But that’s what makes their friendship even better because they can appreciate each other’s differences. I like how when Monroe recently asked Nick to be his best man, and all I could hear in the background of the soundtrack that is my mind is I’ll Stand By You by The Pretenders. And no people, I do not mean that in a fanfiction way. I mean that in a they made me tear up way.

Aidan and Josh on Being Human, played by Sam Witwer and Sam Huntington. I think theirs is a more play off each other bromance. They individually have the best lines on the show, but when you get them together it’s like crown molding to complete the room. Don’t ask me why, but I think that is one of the best scenes of this season. The one where Aidan tries to sell Josh on the house in their alternate, but this is the present if Sally stood up to Danny instead world. And Josh says “don’t you start with the crown molding!” In case you are wondering the soundtrack of my mind plays You’re My Best Friend by Queen. I think this song came to mind watching them at the SDCC in 2013. I knew there bromance was also off screen.

John and Dorian on Almost Human, played by Karl Urban and Michael Ealy. After watching Karl Urban speak at his panel at the ScFi Expo in Dallas this year, my beliefs were confirmed … most of the car scenes are improvised. Every time I see them riding in the squad car together I always feel like Dorian is secretly saying you like me, you think I’m funny a la Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality (the first one) type way. I am hoping by the second season they will have a song added to the playlist.

Sherlock and Watson the BBC Sherlock, played by Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. When Sherlock gave the best man toast at the wedding my soundtrack theme song was My Hero by the Foo Fighters. After Sherlock gave the most touching speech, in the bonus content of my mind in the deleted scenes– I picture some guy in the back doing the slow clap, then pointing at Sherlock a la James Van Der Beek in Varisty Blues.

Erik and Charles Xavier, for this bromance, I’ll go with the characters played by Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy in X-Men: First Class. There is one line that I feel sums up this bromance when Charles tells Erik, Listen to me very carefully, my friend. Killing Shaw will not bring you peace. Oh Erik and Charles, theirs is a complicated bromance. They respect each other, yet some of the choices they make cause for a friction later on.

Tim Bisley and Mike, played by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost on Spaced. If I could pick one scene that best describes this bromance, it’s the one where they play paint ball. That is all I will say because if you have not seen this show you need to. Besides Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are like the kings of bromance. So …. Just watch the show.
Writing this makes me feel that bromances are sometimes better than romances. Hear me out with one question, (side note: perhaps this question comes from me being mostly a tomboy) when you watch a movie or television show with bromance and romance which lines do you remember the most?

I miss Saturday cartoons

I miss Saturday cartoons. I can’t sit here and say that I don’t like the cartoons they show nowadays on Saturday morning, or in general. I can’t because I have not seen them, but I can say that I miss Saturday cartoons from when I was a kid. The closest I get to that now is when they show Charlie Brown during the holidays.

One of my fondest memories of watching Saturday cartoons is watching it with my brother. We could both sit through each cartoon, and there was not any “GI Joe is for boys” or My Little Pony is for girls.” Perhaps it was our upbringing, my mom would not subject us to certain cartoons or say certain toys were for certain genders. I miss waking up early, getting cereal, and spending the whole Saturday morning with my little brother before we went outside (yes, outside with the trees, the grass, the sky) all day with the other neighborhood kids

One of my favorite things was the theme songs. Am I right? Gummi Bears! Bouncing here and there and everywhere. Don’t forget the catch phrases, GI Joe a real American Hero

I am not too sure about the new versions of shows either. I’ve heard about them, but have not viewed them to form an opinion. Although I am not too sure why Strawberry Shortcake needed a makeover. I like my old Strawberry Shortcake. Call me old fashion, but I feel like some things do not need remakes. I’m looking at you Red Dawn.  (Side Note: Please forgive me Josh Hutcherson, its not you, its me. Love you, love Peeta. Hunger Games!)

There are some cartoons that kids may not, will not ever know. Jem, Gargoyles, and Rainbow Brite. Jem was the alter-ego of Jerrica Benton who sang with her band the Holograms. The series was based on their adventures together. Jerrica is able to change her identity with help from a holographic computer named Synergy. It projectors the Jem hologram over her by way of micro-projectors in her earrings. So yes boys and girls, the 80s did the whole secret life with a singer alter-ego first. (I think, it was first.) Gargoyles was a show about (okay yes, Gargoyles) but was I was going to say was they reawaken in New York and protect the city. Oh, and two words people, Riker and Troi. There was people from Trek doing the voices. Rainbow Brite is about a Wisp a girl who finds herself in a land with no color and must find the Sphere of Light to bring back color in the world. (Excuse me a sec. No I’m not crying, but that is beautiful.) Why can’t we all have a Sphere of Light

These types of Saturday cartoons are how I feel about John Hughes movies, they should be part of a young person’s television, or movie education. So next time you mention the words Skeletor, or Shera please make sure to take time to elaborate, even if its just a little. Let’s keep the dream alive people. (Okay, that was a bit dramatic, but I think you know what I mean.)

Underappreciated Movies

Some of the wonderfully, beautifully awesome movies you’ll see and it’s not even scratching the surface yet

I was watching one of my favorite movies, Prey for Rock n Roll. And it got me to start thinking about movies that are in my humble opinion, underappreciated. Then again maybe it’s not so much underappreciated, perhaps it was because not a lot of people saw the movie in the theater. I am not too sure, but … Back to Prey for Rock and Roll. For starters the soundtrack kicks butt. Gina Gershon sings load vocals in a lot of the songs, such as My Favorite Sin, Prey for Rock and Roll, Ms. Tweak, Sam, The Ugly, Every Six Minutes, Pretty Pretty, Bitter Pill, Punk Rock Girl, and Post Nuclear Celebration Party. Gina Gershon went on tour the songs from the movie in front of a live audience.  And yes to answer your question she is my hero. Another hero behind the scenes is Cheri Lovedog whom the movie is based off. Gina Gershon and Laura Petty are too funny together as best friends because they have a natural chemistry.

Fanboys. I have two words for you, Sam Huntington. Need I say more? Okay perhaps I should elaborate. Four dudes travel across country to live out a childhood dream of busting in to Skywalker Ranch. While there is the Star Wars verses Star Trek battle, there is a good parallel between the Star Wars movies and Fanboys itself. Star Wars movies with Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher movies that is. Speaking of Harrison Ford, there is a scene when Eric (Sam Huntington) and Windows (Jay Baruchel) have an argument about Ford being the best actor. To which Windows said Harrison Ford is the greatest actor of all time, and has not made a horrible movie. Pan out as they drive past a billboard ad for Six Day Seven Nights

The next movie might have had a little more viewers than some, but Whip It is on my list. This is one of the few movies I feel it a good representation of the book. I know right? And they book avoids my pet peeve, movie covers on books. Sorry what was I saying? Oh yeah two words, Ellen Page. I know, I know some of the people I think are wonderfully awesome and funny actors cannot be my sole reason for every unappreciated movie. Or can it?

Pirate Radio. For starters let’s take a look at the awesome cast. Bill Nighy, Rhys Ifans, Nick Frost, Tom Sturridge, Tom Brooke, Rhys Darby, Katherine Parkinson, Chris O’Dowd, Kenneth Branagh, Gemma Arterton, Jack Davenport, Emma Thompson, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. If you love any of these actors and have not seen this movie, you need to watch this. The story is about a radio station illegally transmitting their radio shows on international waters so they do not get arrested. Seriously if you love witty and smart movies, you need to watch Pirate Radio.

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Here’s another awesome example of a great cast. Mos Def, Martin Freeman, Sam Rockwell, Zoe Deschanel, Alan Rickman, and John Malkovich. Again if you like witty and smart movies you need to watch this. For the love of Pete! I think the cast says it all. I know I said I would not use wonderfully, awesome, brilliant actors as the only reason to watch a movie. But along with writers and directors they make stories we love come to life.
