Or, why do I feel like the music and tv shows that I like turn me into a hipster?
Guys, I do know who Adele is. But it got me thinking when I first heard Chasing Pavements. I was like I need to listen to more. Then, when Adele was up for her first Grammy I was watching a talk show where the host was out in the streets asking if people were up to speed on the artist nominated that year. During the segment this guy asked “who’s Adele?” All I could do is sigh as my husband gave me the there, there pat on the shoulder.
Speaking of Adele, have you seen the Carpool Karaoke The Late Late Show with James Corden … with Adele? It is funny! Well, I think it is funny. I can’t lie to you I’ve seen about six times.
I am not sure why when I like a song or something I see (YouTube, tv shows, movies) I have to see it multiple times. What? I know when I have reached my limit. It’s when I can just about quote it word for word. No, that’s not weird! You’re weird! “I like being weird. Weird’s all I got. That and my sweet style.” #Moss #TheITCrowd #EmbraceYourWeird #FeliciaDay
Side notes: Seriously though being weird is not a bad thing, it’s different. Being different is a good thing.
So … yeah sorry about the rant…what was I saying? Oh yes, Adele is one of my favorites Carpool Karaokes. Is karaokes a word? Meh, oh well. My other favorite is the one with Rod Stewart. That guy “God Bless you Rod Stewart” always makes me smile.
And I know actors are not the characters they play, but I can’t help but think its Smithy! When I see James Corden singing. Perhaps it is because I love Gavin & Stacey. Who’s Gavin & Stacey? You might be able to find it on the YouTube. If not I would recommend buying it. If you like British comedies/drama/awesomeness you should check it out.
Don’t worry I am getting to the hipster part. I was thinking about how it seems like now everyone knows who Adele is. Okay, perhaps not everyone. That’s unfair I have not met everyone.
Anyway, so ever since I keep hearing people say how much they like Adele. I say to myself, I liked Adele before you. I feel in love with her music before you knew she was. Then I think, whoa Melissa, quit messing around … do you have to say that like a hipster when you say that?
But what is a hipster exactly? I know what social media’s definition of hipster is. Is it really fair for me to use the word hipster? Maybe I should say I sound like a Sheldon Cooper when I talk about stuff like that. Eek that sounds worse. Anywho you know what I mean.
It’s like The Walking Dead. My husband and I have been watching since day one. Then after a couple of years as it is gaining more and more popularity, all of a sudden everyone is talking about The Walking Dead. Then there’s that voice. I feel in love with The Walking Dead before you knew who Rick Grimes is.
Then, I am like you know what Melissa? It’s a good thing other people like the same music and shows you like because they can go on making music/shows.
And to answer your question, yes I talk to myself. The point is, that means more people to talk to about said music and shows. Perhaps even one day I can say The Guild and someone will say, I like that show to.
Maybe this should have been called Who’s Adele?
Or, why do I feel like the music and tv shows make me keep talking to myself. And I was talking to you guys when I said that … yes, I was.

Random thoughts about things I’ve always wanted to say from a movie or show
Have you ever said to yourself after the fact, I wish I would have said this? Or stare at a blank Twitter screen and try and think of a play on words? It happens to me a majority of the time. Usually when it comes to a blank computer screen after about 5 seconds I say aloud, “I’m done!” Because once I start to over think it, it’s not funny anymore.
There are some things I have been able to say because of timing. I shared one in my last blog in which my husband said my face lit up. And I replied I am a warrior and an assassin my face does not light up.
There was a Scott and Ramona moment my husband and I shared a while ago.
Me: I’m going over here to read for a while.
Husband: Then I’ll be all alone.
Me: You’re not alone. You’re just having some idiotic dream.
Husband: Does that mean we can make out.
Me: …
Wait a minute! Most of my perfect timing happens the most when I am with my husband. I guess that is what happens … wait for the cheesiness … when you marry your best friend … there it is.
Perhaps I should take a cue from The Doctor and make cards for when there are other occasions. So I thought I would share some of those waiting for the right moment quotes in no particular order, and mostly just because I like these quotes.
Today. Today … At the edge of our hopes, at the end of our time, we have chosen not only to believe in ourselves, but in each other. Today there is not a man nor woman in here that shall stand alone. Not today. Today we face the monsters that are at our door and bring the fight to them! Today, we are canceling the apocalypse! – Stacker Pentecost, Pacific Rim
I am not sure when I would use this outside of the apocalypse, and after a slow motion walk into the room. Maybe as a go get them team speech? I love that speech. Let’s face it I love Idris Elba.
I do admit there are some of his movies I have not seen. For example any movie where he plays the villain. I think he is an amazing actor but after watching Luther my brain just cannot accept him as a villain. Not gonna do it. I made the mistake of watching Losers once, don’t get me wrong IMHO Chris Evans was hilarious in it. But I kept believing Idris Elba’s character was going to be like I’m just kidding guys I was doing a double, double cross. See my brain can’t do it. Denial.
Okay it’s another Stacker Pentecost quote, but you guys Idris Elba. It’s a really good one for an “I’m not messing around moment.” One: don’t you every touch me again. Two: Don’t you ever touch me again. Now, you have no idea who the hell I am, or where I’ve come from, and I’m not about to tell you my whole life story. All I need to be to you and everybody on this dome is a fixed point. The last man standing. I do not need your sympathy or your admiration. All I need is your compliance and your fighting skills. And if I can’t get that. Then you can go back to the wall that I found you crawling on. Do I make myself clear?
My interest in what you are talking about is low to moderate. –Vork, The Guild
In the context that this quote is used it is funny. I like Vork. He is my spirit animal. Well Vork is my spirit animal when I am grumpy. Oh and when I need to channel my dry sense of humor. Codex is my introvert but still kicks butt spirit animal. Admiral Ackbar is my spirit animal when I am suspicious. You know that I got a feeling someone is watching me moment. I’m not the only one that gets that feeling. Right? *She ask nervously.*
I don’t want to be just one thing. –Four, Divergent
Okay I have not read these books, but who could have missed the previews when the movie came out. I have never said it out loud. But I often think this when someone says oh you’re a Trekkie, a Whovian, a nerd, a this, a that. I like a lot of things, hence the “I don’t want to be one thing.”
In the words of Delenn from Babylon 5 – “Then I will tell you a great secret, Captain. Perhaps the greatest secret of all time. The molecules of your body are the same molecules that make up this station, and the nebula outside, that burn inside the stars themselves. We are star stuff, we are the universe made manifest, trying to figure itself out. As we have both learned, sometimes the universe requires a change of perspective.”
I am not sure if this blog as a point. It’s all just random thoughts. But I guess if there is a morale to the story. It is as The Doctor says, 900 years of times and space and I never meet anyone who wasn’t important. So like what you are going to like … to thine own self be true.

I do …. always
My wedding ring which I like is a
silver band. It’s simple and classic. I say like because I cannot say love.
What is important is the meaning behind the ring, what it represents. It’s a
wonderful reminder of the honor I get of being able to spend the rest of my
life with my best friend.
So my husband surprised me this past week.
He had my wedding ring inscribed. What I liked about this surprise also is it
was just us. Before I continue I’ll try (try) not to have too many side rants
or thoughts going on in the story because it’s a story that matters to me, but
I can’t promise I won’t end with a quote from my favorite movie About Time.
I will not say what the ring says
because there are some things that should stay between the couple. Let’s not
forget the Mr. Wiggly awkward fiasco of 2010. If you don’t know who Mr. Wiggly
please get on the YouTubes and watch The Guild. In my humble opinion it is a
wonderfully, awesome witty show.
During the moment my husband gave me
the ring, we realized one of the words was misspelled. It still made me happy
because all I saw was the thought that went behind everything he did to
surprise me. And I also look at it as a symbol to his dorkiness. Don’t worry its
okay he knows I think he is a dork. That is one of the things that first
attracted me to him.
We talked about the misspelling a
couple of days later and he said while it still bugged him a little, all that
mattered was how my face still lit up even after the misspelling. To which I
said I am a warrior and an assassin I do not light up. Cue in Fooled Around and
Fell in Love.
So the morale of the story here is
when it comes to our significant others remember not just the big moments but
the small ones. When you’re both on the couch (side rant: I guess depending on
which you prefer or how you grew up you can also call it a sofa) reading a
book. It’s those small moments that make the big moments special because you
know a great big expensive gift pales in comparison to the love.
To some small moments may sound
boring but that’s okay because every couple is different. For me what matters
is getting to spend time with my best friend. I get to spend the rest of my
life with the one I love. He is everything I never knew I wanted the first day
we met. And everything I knew I was missing by the second day in what would be
the rest of our lives.
“And in the end I think I’ve learned
the final lesson from my travels in time; and I’ve even gone one step further
than my father did: The truth is I now don’t travel back at all, not even for
the day. I just try to live every day as if I’ve deliberately come back to this
one day, to enjoy it, as if it was the full final day of my extraordinary,
ordinary life."

Charlie come back!
I don’t think I am committing a
spoiler alert crime by saying I like many other cried when we saw Charlie died
on Supernatural. I love when Felicia Day guest stars on Supernatural. Her,
Jared Padalecki, and Jensen Ackles have a natural chemistry. Get it natural?
Just kidding. It’s a bit of a cliché or whatever to say people have natural
chemistry, but its okay, I like cheese. And this statement is true. Of course
the fan in me is like does anyone really die on Supernatural? I’m looking at
you Sam and Dean.
I know from conventions, etc most of
Felicia Day fans come from Buffy. But I come from a little YouTube sensation,
you might have heard of it, The Guild. Okay Sorry about that, I did not mean to
sound like Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons there. After watching the first
episode of The Guild, that was it. I was like Felicia Day is my hero!
If you’ve read any of my past blogs I
wrote one called My Husband’s Geeking Out verses My Geeking Out in which I tell
the very short story (because it all happened so fast) of how I met Felicia Day
at a Dallas Fan Days and told her “I love you. You’re my hero.” Then I
proceeded to run off. It was like I just said something nice about you, but I
can’t stick around to talk about because I got to go uh… see you moment.
On a side note I am trying to get
better at that. I mean at Star Wars Celebration I did say it is nice to meet
you to Mark Hamill. That’s progress right? She said looking around the room
waiting for an approving look. I mean I did not run off after I said it. So … I
am going to say, progress. Eh, who am I kidding I am an introvert by nature.
When I first started watching The
Guild. I tried to talk to work friends who liked gaming and YouTube about
Felicia Day, and I would get who is Felicia Day? …… I know right? That’s a lie
that I am even listening to, to begin with.
I am not here to act as though I know
Felicia Day on a personal level because I don’t. I only know what I experience from
Fan Days and SDCC. Hmm … I guess I
should put Comic Con into context. A couple of years after my Fan Days
experience my husband and I were at the Geek & Sundry Lounge. He just
started his blog and when he went up to Felicia Day and gave her his business
card, and she said thank you for taking time to give her the card.
So back to what I was saying from my
experience and talking to other convention goers Felicia Day is a down to earth
person. She genuinely is herself. She does not pretend to be something she is
not. She also cares about the people who come to meet me her.
I know that Felicia Day (sorry I am
not sure why I keep saying her full name like that, anywho) has a lot of great
movies, shows, and YouTube creations to her name. Which is why we need more
people like Felicia Day in the world because they represent the geeky, nerdy,
creative, etc dreams of others and the best of us.
IMHO. And if I can be real for one
moment. To be who you truly are is a scaring thing. Felicia Day is not afraid
to say how she feels or what she thinks. She is my hero is because in a world
where people pretend to be something they are not or hide behind the keyboard,
there is this person who is saying this is me.

Random thoughts about books, television, things, life, whatnot
Life is not whatnot, and it’s none of
your business. That was a John Hughes reference. Sixteen Candles, John Hughes?
You know that guy? That guy. I think I may have said this before, but I think
that John Hughes needs to be part of youth education. He is timeless.
I recently saw a hilarious book
review on YouTube. Then it got me thinking what if there is no such thing as a
bad book. Wait, hear me out. What if it’s just a matter of preference? Because
someone, even if it’s one person, liked the book. Right? (She asked not to confident.)
Maybe what I mean by preferences, is maybe since our brains function
differently. It’s like when I read a book that I can’t get into, I can’t say
that I don’t like the book because that would not be fair since I have not
finished the book. And I will try reading the book later because my mind is not
in the right frame of mind in a manner of speaking.
I often joke with my husband that I
should put out an ad for a work friend. I used to have one, we talked about
movies, funny things we’ve read and seen on the internet. While it is stuff
that I already talk to my husband about those things first, during breaks I can
continue that conversation during the work day. So then I started thinking
about what my work ad would say. Would I just list a bunch of things that I
like? You know looking for a work friend, must like some or most of the
following. Also should know that this list does not include everything that I
like, and I’m happy to be lead to read/watch recommendations as well.
Doctor Who
Firefly (not just the show but the
actors as well)
Star Trek
Star Wars (Yes, I like both.)
Babylon 5
The Guild
Parks and Rec
Scott Pilgrim (comic series and film)
Battlestar Galatica and Caprica
Defiance (On that note, I also enjoy
the music of Bear McCreary.)
Books (While I know that is a broad subject. It’s good to read, discuss and share.)
Books (While I know that is a broad subject. It’s good to read, discuss and share.)
Speaking of books is there a certain
copy of Mockingjay that everyone else
read? With all the teasers and movie trailers that I have come out I have to
say, I liked the ending of the book.
Speaking of books I recently read Rat Queens, 1-5. While there is some
language in the series, it is not said just to be funny, crud, etc. I like that
my husband tells me about the comics and books he reads because then I get
introduced to series like Rat Queens.
For those of you who have not read this series, it about a questing team of
misfits who like to have fun as much as they like to fight. And I have say,
Gary is my new hero.
Speaking of my better half aka my
best friend, I often wonder if people give us a strange looks because he waits
for me to get in the building. That needs some context. Since we first started
dating, when he would drop me off he would wait until I was in the house before
driving away. My husband and I carpool because his work is nor too far away
from mine. Now he does the same thing when he drops me off at work. Call me old
fashion but I like that he does that. And I like the fact that I can turn
around one last time and see him smile before my work day begins. I just
realized old fashion is not the right phrase, I think being in love would be
more accurate. Just because you’re married does not mean that you should stop
being in love. And just because you are a certain age does not mean you’re
heart stops leaping when you hear their voice on the other end of the phone.

Just because everyone else is doing it, you should too
Let me explain the title of this blog. I am not talking about the old saying, just because everyone else is doing doesn’t mean you should too. What I am referring to (who talks like that in a blog, referring to …sorry) is television shows.
When my husband and I first went to
SDCC, we were baffled (wait does anyone use that word anymore, baffled…sorry
about that again) at how many people slept overnight to see the Doctor Who
panel. At that point we were not
Whovians yet. When we got home after SDCC, we decided to start watching Doctor
Who. And it was like Battlestar Galactica re-imagined all over again. We said to
ourselves, dang it this is good!
I think it is good to be open minded
because even if someone says you need to watch this show and it turns out you
don’t like it, the people who direct or act in the show may lead you to another
show.
It’s like BBC America when I first
started watching Doctor Who eventually I discovered In the Flesh. BTW if you
are not watching this show you need to. While some may argue, it reminds me of
Walking Dead because it is about the people. BDFF!
Besides leading you to another show
it can also lead you to a webisode like The Guild. If you have not watched
these webisodes yet. You need to! And if you are looking to save on your data
plan, you can watch – nay own The Guild on DVD.
One of the things that I love about
The Guild is you don’t have to be a gamer to appreciate the charming sense of
humor. I always like watching a show in season one, and then seeing how the
story line and production changes. Most importantly the best lines ever, which
I have fallen in love with again in rewatching The Guild.
My interest in what you are saying is
low to moderate. –Vork
Did you borrow my crayon set? And my
mind. –Clara
This is a nightmare level. Just
control, alt, delete me. –Zaboo
One recent show that I’ve come across
because of Felicia Day and thousands of people lined up at SDCC is
Supernatural. While I may feel like I am always late to the party, I am glad to
be open minded.
There are times when I get kind of
sad because the shows that are the best don’t get a fair shot. Almost Human, I
am holding my hat off to you. But I think as sad as it is to lose our favorite
shows, it gives us that open mind to seek and search for the next favorite
show. For example Firefly has led to watching Castle. Nebula 9 lives! So next time someone says you should watch
this, give it a chance. You just might like it.
